About the picture:
An abusive mother in Kwiduka village T/A Malemia in Zomba is in Police custody after wounding her 8 year old son. Diana Mussa Liwonde wounded her son Jafali (Not real name) after she caught him stealing relish. She tied the boy’s hands behind and used a razor blade to repeatedly wound his fingers thereby cutting one of the veins on a middle finger resulting into heavy bleeding. The child was taken to a YONECO community coordinator in T/A Malemia who immediately called the National Child Helpline. The helpline did not hesitate but rushed to the scene where they took the child to Domasi Police and Domasi Hospital. Later the team in the company of Domasi Police Child protection officer went to Kwiduka village and arrested Jafali’s mother.
Reports from community members who jeered when the mother was being taken revealed that the mother has the trend of beating her children while the police officer also reported that this was not the first time the woman was summoned to police for child abuse, the first time was when she had beaten and denied food her 14 years old girl for days when she discovered the girl had a boyfriend. Diana is a mother of five children who were fathered by different men and is currently pregnant in her sixth marriage. Youth Net and Counselling has been operating a toll free Child Helpline 80001234 since August 2006 and is accessible through TNM and MTL lines throughout the country. In March 2011 Government of Malawi through ministry of Gender, Child and Community Service took over ownership of the initiative and turned it to a National Child Helpline. On monthly basis the line handles over 80 serious child abuse cases.
