| Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) has donated assorted learning materials to juvenile and women prisoners at Zomba Central Prison. The items include note books, boxes of ball point pens, chalk, black board dusters, plain papers, netballs, footballs and HIV magazines. The items were handed over to prison authorities on 25th June 2010. The donation was a response to the request made to the organization by the prison authorities. Malawi prison services introduced education department within its structures to provide education to prisoners which did not have the opportunity before their conviction. At the moment there are classes from standard 1 to form 4. Previous result of candidate’s performance in standard 8, form 2 and form 4 indicates that if the sector is promoted and supported education in prisons can contribute to the reformation of prisoners. Currently the prisoners are learning on an open space inside the prison. They sit on the floor and classes are usually suspended during the rainy season.
YONECO has been supporting women and young prisoner with a number of activities. Some time back the organization supported women who have children in the prison with food stuff and clothing’s for their children. It has been sensitizing the juvenile prisoners with HIV and AIDS awareness through video show and live band. YONECO is now planning to start life skills sessions with the young offenders. Zomba Central Prison is the maximum security prison in Malawi and normally it keeps the highest number of prisoners.
